Read gold benchmark, broker and dealer quotes with their timestamps, instruments, units and quote sides before explaining a price difference.

Label Every Quote: instructional diagram for lesson 28

A gold price needs a complete label

A number becomes useful when the instrument, source, time, unit, currency and quote convention are known. An auction benchmark, a futures transaction, a dealer’s physical offer and an over-the-counter broker quote can all be described casually as the gold price. They answer different questions. Before studying a discrepancy, preserve the full label for each observation. The close of a candle is also a summary based on a chosen series, not a universal price available to every participant.

Distinguish an auction reference from a continuous quote

The LBMA Gold Price is a London-delivery benchmark set through scheduled auctions, rather than a continuously executable retail bid and ask. Check its methodology and observation date at the source. A delayed publication remains a historical reference even when the webpage is opened now. An intermediary can use that benchmark within a product formula while charging a separate spread or fee. The existence of a benchmark does not establish that a small retail order can be executed at the reported number.

Reconcile the apparent difference

Imagine a historical benchmark of USD 2,000 per fine ounce at its specified observation time. Later, a broker displays bid 2,006 and ask 2,007, while a physical product offer is USD 2,075. Subtracting all three from the benchmark produces gaps, but those gaps mix time, quote side and product terms. First align observations where possible. Then compare the dealer offer with a suitable same-time fine-metal reference. Any remaining difference still needs the product’s costs and contractual terms; it is not automatically an arbitrage.

Preserve timestamp and timezone provenance

Record whether a time represents an event, a quote observation, publication or retrieval. These timestamps can differ. Store the source timezone and date, and convert explicitly to Dubai time if that supports the study. A London clock label cannot be converted by one fixed offset across the entire year. Also identify stale, delayed and missing observations. Forward-filling a quote in a spreadsheet does not turn it into a fresh executable quote and can hide the absence of an update.

Practice task: prepare a quote comparison sheet

Create five fields for each fictional observation: instrument, source convention, timestamp with timezone, unit and currency, and bid/ask or benchmark status. Add a sixth field explaining whether execution at that value is actually offered. Try comparing an old benchmark with a new dealer offer and list the information required before estimating the premium. Use the execution-audit lesson to understand why a chart’s reference may differ from an order trigger or fill. A good comparison begins with provenance, not subtraction.

Check your understanding

Can you apply the idea?

Answer three questions, then check the explanation for every answer. You can repeat the check after reviewing the lesson.

Knowledge check: not attempted

1. Which information is needed before interpreting two gold quotes as a premium?
2. A historical auction reference is opened on a webpage today. Does that make it a current executable retail offer?
3. What must a timezone conversion preserve?
