A checklist should change permission

A useful checklist is a short decision gate, not a decorative list that every trade automatically passes. Each item should point to observable evidence or an explicit calculation. If a failed item never changes the action, it is not controlling anything. Separate market eligibility, execution feasibility and account exposure. These questions can produce different answers: a valid setup may still be too expensive to execute, and an affordable position may still lack a qualifying setup. The purpose is a repeatable decision record rather than a feeling of certainty.

Check the market claim first

Identify the rule version, market condition and exact observation that qualifies the setup. Refer to the timeframe hierarchy from lesson eleven and preserve which candles are complete. Ask whether a major scheduled event changes the plan’s permission. State the condition that would invalidate the idea. If the explanation requires a new exception that was not present in the written method, record that fact before acting. A compelling story about gold is not interchangeable with an executable condition, and agreement among several indicators does not remove uncertainty.

Translate the proposal into an order

Confirm the instrument, direction, quantity units, order type and price references. Calculate the planned exposure using the current entry assumption rather than an older, more attractive price. Include existing positions and working orders. Check the applicable costs, margin requirement and exit instructions. For an attached stop or target, understand what happens after a partial fill or manual close. These are operational questions that can be rehearsed in a demo environment. A checklist cannot repair a misunderstood platform after an unexpected instruction has already created exposure.

Check whether the order has acquired another purpose

Write one plain sentence describing why this action is being considered now. Compare it with the market rule. If the purpose is to erase a loss, catch up with another trader or relieve the discomfort of watching a move without participating, the motivation has changed. That observation is not a diagnosis; it is information about the current decision. Define in advance what prompts a pause or an observation-only session. Do not treat a brief pause as automatic proof that judgment has recovered. Reassess the original permission conditions.

Practice task: record pass, fail or unknown

Create four fields: setup evidence, executable order, total exposure and session permission. For each, record pass, fail or unknown with one supporting fact. Treat unknown as unresolved rather than silently converting it to pass. Save the checklist before the simulated order and review it afterward alongside the outcome. Include cases in which withholding an order missed a profitable move; otherwise the review rewards only hindsight. Before You Click develops this decision-focused approach. Completing the beginner series prepares a more structured study process, not a guarantee of readiness for live risk.

Check your understanding

Can you apply the idea?

Answer three questions, then check the explanation for every answer. You can repeat the check after reviewing the lesson.

Knowledge check: not attempted

1. What is the practical purpose of a pre-trade checklist?
2. An attractive setup fails a required exposure check. What is a valid checklist outcome?
3. Why record emotional urgency separately from setup evidence?
