Position size is part of the strategy
Understand how stop distance, contract specifications and execution costs interact when sizing an illustrative XAU/USD trade.
Define the loss before the order
An entry price describes where a position begins. A risk budget describes the financial consequence you are prepared to accept if the thesis fails. Set that budget before examining how much profit a trade might produce. Expressing risk as a fraction of equity can support consistency, but no single percentage is appropriate for every trader. Correlated positions and accumulated session losses also matter.
Connect dollars, ounces and stop distance
For an instrument whose profit and loss is linear in ounces, planned price risk equals ounces multiplied by the absolute difference between entry and stop. Suppose an illustrative account is $10,000, the selected risk budget is 0.5%, and the stop is $10 per ounce away. The budget is $50 and the theoretical exposure is five ounces before costs. If the contract represents 100 ounces per lot, that corresponds to 0.05 lots. Check the broker’s actual specification rather than assuming this convention.
Execution changes realized risk
Spreads, commissions, currency conversion and adverse slippage can increase a loss. A stop order is an instruction, not a guarantee of execution at the displayed price. Gaps and thin liquidity can create losses beyond the initial estimate. Minimum order sizes and size increments may also prevent exact sizing. Round exposure down when necessary; do not increase the budget to satisfy an order ticket.
Manage the portfolio, not one ticket
Several positions can express the same gold thesis. Splitting one idea across tickets does not diversify it. Track combined exposure and decide in advance how much additional risk remains available after earlier losses. Our Market Desk calculator demonstrates arithmetic only. Before live use, confirm contract units and test the process in a practice environment. A correct size limits planned exposure; it cannot make an untested strategy profitable.
