Read the structure before the signal

My reading list →

A practical framework for reading gold trends, ranges and failed breakouts without treating a single candle as a complete trading thesis.

Start with the market’s condition

A chart can be moving upward while offering a poor location for a new long position. Direction and opportunity are separate questions. Begin by marking the most recent meaningful swing highs and lows on a higher timeframe. A sequence of higher highs and higher lows describes an advancing structure; lower highs and lower lows describes a declining structure. When swings repeatedly overlap, the more useful description may be a range. The exact swing definition matters less than applying it consistently.

Treat levels as areas of negotiation

Support and resistance are reference zones where participants previously changed behavior. They are not barriers that price must respect. Mark the zone, identify how price approaches it, and observe what happens after contact. A rapid move into resistance followed by immediate rejection conveys different information from a slow consolidation beneath it. Neither observation guarantees the next move. Both help define a scenario that can be invalidated.

A breakout needs an execution plan

Before trading beyond a boundary, decide what qualifies as acceptance: a close beyond the level, a retest, or another consistently defined condition. Then identify the point where that interpretation fails. If the stop required by the structure is too wide for the risk budget, reduce position size or pass. Tightening the stop solely to obtain a larger position changes the trade’s logic.

Review decisions across a sample

Record the timeframe, market condition, entry rule and invalidation before entry. Afterward, distinguish a failed idea from a rule violation. A valid setup can lose. A poor decision can win. Review enough comparable observations to assess the method after spreads, commissions and slippage. The purpose of a structure framework is to make decisions testable, rather than to explain every move after it occurs.
